I had a very interesting conversation with one of my mastermind groups this morning.
I asked them,
“If you hired a coach today, what’s the number one thing you would work on?”
I’ll share the results (and why I asked the question) in a later post, but first…
how would you answer this question?

I would work on a process of cutting through all the info you can find online about building your business, and get down to doing it.
It’s so easy spending a full day finding things that could help – taking action would be the key words.
Hey Graham! You said it, taking action is the key. I can’t think of a better thing to work on with a coach!
Theresa
I’m with Graham on this one. Information overload is just a huge distraction among all the other distractions that already exist. Of course it’s natural to want to do things the right way, but just because the method is the same, doesn’t mean it’ll work the same across the board.
I definitely have a problem with this, always trying to perfect something. Unfortunately the only way to really learn the best way to do something is trial and error and, yes, sometimes failure. Or maybe its fortunate? That means I don’ t have to read anything

Hi Theresa,
You ALWAYS ask the toughest questions!
The first thing I would work on with a coach would be to figure out what the first thing to work on should be. I’m not trying to be funny here. I mean it!! I have so much going on and so many directions I could take, I’d want help with identifying the right direction for me.
In fact, I’m pretty sure a lot of people could relate! I decided over last weekend that I’m going to start addressing that kind of thing on my blog. Perhaps a journey type thing… shared with others perhaps… finding the right direction when standing at a crossroads… not sure yet. Still working on the idea. Yep… that’s idea #1,297,323 but right now it feels right. (Ok, so I exaggerate sometimes.

I can relate Deb! I think you raise an excellent point and you address a dilemma that is common to a lot of people. This would be an excellent place to start.
I love your idea for your blog. In fact, I’d love to talk with you about it. How about it?
Theresa
btw – your exaggeration was perfect! Over a million ideas! And some people say they can’t think of single thing. You are awesome.:)
I would love to talk with you Theresa! I’ll send you a private email. Let’s set something up for next week. Big hugs for always being so generous with your supportive replies!

I was going to ask you how to leave a comment, but you covered it.
“You can leave a comment by clicking on the word “comments” below the post headline.” LOL
Actually, Deb makes a great point about deciding what to work on.
Well done Debs.

Hi Keith,
About those leave a comment directions. You would not believe how many people I know tell me they do not know how to leave a comment. And the number of emails I receive (via my contact page)? Pretty amazing. Here’s a question for you. Does the same thing happen over at your blog? And do you publish those emails in your comments after receiving them? I don’t primarily because I see email as a private communication. But I do get ideas for future posts. Just curious.
I agree… Deb makes a great point:)
T
Hi T – only kidding about the instructions.
The only people who can comment quickly and easilly are other bloggers.
We take it for granted.
Truth to tell T, I don’t get many emails.
Looks as though nobody loves me.
If I did get any I wouldn’t publish them.
Agree with you about being private.

Hope the coaching is going well T.
You have a great manner for a coach.
Back to the tennis…..

This isn’t a trick question, is it, Theresa? Multiple choice answers would have been nice.
” … what’s the number one thing you would work on?”
Product creation.
I’ve been wanting to create a product (forever) in recorded webinar format but certain tasks leave my feet planted in cement.
So I would seek out a coach who’s an expert in “design” and “technology”. Those are the two areas where I get stuck. For example, I have no problem creating a series of power point slides and recording an audio that accompanies them. However, I’m clueless when it comes to how to sync the slides with the audio. A “techie”, I’m not!
I really embrace the “accountability factor” that comes along with having a coach. It’s always easier for me to get things accomplished when I’m given specific guidelines and deadlines. May as well face it … I do my best work under pressure.
Looking forward to your follow-up post!

Hi Melanie,
You can easily do this on a Mac’s Keynote. 1. Make your slides. 2. Click on “Record Slideshow” and read your slides and elaborate as much as you want. Then when you done with one slide click next and keep talking and so on. Everything will be recorded with perfect timing!
I coudn’t resist.

Gee, Derek … thanks. I don’t own a Mac. LOL!
But your “can’t resist” nature is adorable.

Hi Mel!
This is not a trick question. Just a little “ask campaign”. As a coach, I’m wondering what specific things people are looking for from a coaching relationship. More specifically, what would people hire a coach to help them with?
My mastermind group(s) and colleagues took another route entirely in their response to my question. They described the ideal coaching relationship… rather than what they wanted to work on. And I was surprised by their comments. (In fact, you’ve said much the same thing as most of the other people I’ve been talking to. More along the lines of having specific guidelines and deadlines.)
Then of course, there’s the old debate about ‘what is the difference between a coach and a consultant?’ The techie stuff may very well fall under the consultant category.
This simple question has given me a lot to think about.
Thanks for your answers. I really appreciate it.
T
btw – I’ve had the great pleasure of seeing you under pressure. There’s no question about it, you rock!
Hi Theresa,
If I knew the answer to that question, I wouldn’t probably need a coach:)
OK, I already have goals, so I don’t need help with that. What I need is practical strategies to help me achieve those goals.
For example: One of my goals is to buy an apartment building by the end of the year.
Number one thing would be, how do I get founding to pull it off? Do I need founding in the first place? Or how much? Do I need a partner, or not?
I don’t even know if business coach would help me here. Maybe I need an RE pro instead?
I don’t know. I guess I don’t know what coaches do in the first place, ha, ha.
I enjoy reading others comments. Intriguing post and comments.

Hey Derek!
We’ve got to talk. Real estate investing is one of my top areas of expertise, including multi-family. Want to do a Skype call? Or a regular old phone call? I’d love to help.
T
btw – I hired both a coach and a consultant when I first moved out of single-family investing into multi-family investing. Both played a valuable role in my success. My coach helped me reach my specific goal. My consultant helped me hire and lead my team (among many other things).
It’s a tough question Theresa! I think I’d like some help in telling myself that I’m not a procrastinator. My inner feeling is that I procrastinate a lot, but all external sources show otherwise… But I just can’t get out of me the impression that I’m a (mild) slacker. It is almost like some kind of working disease
Cheers,
Ruben

Hi Ruben
“… I’m a (mild) slacker.”
Great description. LOL
Keith Davis recently posted..The Coolest Voice on the Internet
This is not what I would describe myself to others, but it is how I feel some days. Something (not as tough, though) like the young that see themselves fat but they aren’t.
Cheers,
Ruben

Hi Ruben!
How very insightful. You wouldn’t describe yourself this way. External sources tell you otherwise. Yet… you know there’s something there. And that is half the battle. But I’m pretty sure you know that, don’t you?
It all really boils down to are you a slacker or aren’t you? And who gets to decide? Is there a reason you would kid yourself or do you have standards that are too high? Unreasonably high? Or is this subconscious belief someone else’s idea of you or of what a slacker is? Something you were told by someone else? Just some questions to explore.
The bottom line is you don’t believe it. Right? It’s an interesting question and I’ glad you brought it up here in this post. You are one of the few people I’ve heard from who address our mindset as something we would bring to a coaching relationship. And this is where we can grow beyond our wildest dreams. By leaps and bounds. Thanks for a great comment.

Hi T
Just given you a mention over at…

Take a look.

Hey Keith thanks for the mention! I just had a chance to go take a look. That is a new blog to me. I like Frank’s style, that’s for sure. It will be fun to poke around.
I really appreciate your support. btw — we named our little fellow Jack, Jack Blue. My hubby might be calling him J.B. … but I’m sticking with Jack. It was the very first name that came to mind. And Blue? That idea came from my husband. Grey cats are often referred to as blue. Keep this under your hat, I’ll be posting an update as soon as I can get Jack to hold still long enough for an adorable photo.
