A girlfriend once told me “sometimes she felt she didn’t know anything everyone else didn’t already know.” At the time, it struck me as an extraordinary thing to say. It still does. I even started my about page with her comment.
My friend was wondering if she had anything new to say — or to teach. It’s kind of a heartbreaking comment when you think about it. Wow. Is this the result of the information age?
Or, was she just hanging out with the wrong crowd at the time?
This is a good thing for all of us to ask ourselves.
Maybe it’s time to start talking to some new people. People who ask, “What if?” People who know it’s not possible for everything to be known and new ideas are just waiting to be discovered.
One idea truly can be life changing.
Believing that there is so much more to know and learn can be empowering. We’ve got to hang out with people who get this. Think about the people you know who are really busy and involved with life. Who continue to learn and explore new things.
Maybe you should ask them out to lunch.

Here’s another idea. You can talk to me — I’m totally game for a short phone call. Check out my coaching page for more info.

Hi Theresa
“A girlfriend once told me that “sometimes she felt she didn’t know anything everyone else didn’t already know.”
I had to read that three times before I understood it but as you say, that is rather sad.
Never thought about it but I must know a few things that nobody else knows!
For instance…..
I’ll get back to you when I decide what they are.
BTW – love your short posts.
You have the ability to make an impact with so few words.
A useful skill when weary bloggers are reading.

Okay… sorry about that Keith. I didn’t mean to cause serious brain damage. If I remember right, I had to really think about what she said, too. It’s like a trick sentence. But a good one… one worth thinking about.
Thanks for reading… even though weary. And guess what? You totally know some things I don’t know about — that’s why I love your blog! You also dig up some cool stuff too. Lookin’ for ideas… that’s what I’m talking about!
Glad you like the short posts. Thanks for your comments as always.

I agree that it’s a sad thought, but I can understand where it comes from. Sometimes when I’m thinking of posts to write, I wonder if it’s truly a completely new idea. I’ve learned so much online and through my work, so obviously all the things I know came from somewhere. It’s important to remember that no one out there has the same source of information that each one of us has. No one out there has interpreted it all in the same way, or drawn the same conclusions, or brought the same life experiences into it.
That’s where the original thoughts come from.
Hi Natalia! How are you? What a smart comment… seriously. I love how you’ve added to this post. When I come across something that strikes me as interesting, the first thing I do is make a note of it. Then the fun begins. How can I interpret what I’ve seen or heard? What part is relevant? What can I learn from it? How can I share it in a meaningful way? Much like what you’ve done here with your comment. Ideas can and should be the springboard where new ideas take off.
I’m so glad you came by. And I’m glad you understand what my friend was saying. Thank you.

I think it’s important in all walks of life to continue to expose yourself to new people and new surroundings, especially in the business sense of things.

So true. You know, I didn’t mention new surroundings. You’re right. Excellent point!
