The project: Hire two teams to design two new logos for under $100. I’ll be blogging about it and showing you the results. Update: I’ve hired three design companies for the competition.
It’s Day 3 of The Logo Project and, wow!, I’m really worried that I am going to get what I paid for.
The $19 dollar logo arrived by email in less than twelve hours! Overnight.
Is this some kind of record?
Or, was some designer working hours on end somewhere in another part of the world while I slept?
I couldn’t wait to open the file. But I still had the Day 3 post to write. So I forced myself to wait. Hours. Sweet anticipation.
It’s amazing being on the other side of a design project. I’m learning a lot about what it’s like to be the client. And, yes, I should have probably done this little project when I was actively designing for my clients.
Hmmm. Have you tried this in your business? Being the client?
Like that reality show Undercover Boss.

And, now for the fun part. Will you help? I’d like for you to critique the first design. And no worries! I didn’t design it, so let loose. Tell me what you really think!
I’ll add my own critique in the comments.
This is a logo competition, see who the competitors are by visiting Day 1 and Day 2 of The Logo Project.
And thanks in advance for your comments. I really appreciate it!

Hi Theresa,
How interesting! Logos for under $100? This grabs my attention having been in this field for a time. One of the companies we hired out charged $200,000 for a logo for one of our products. Can you believe it? That’s some serious branding.
Anyhoo, I like the logo, for the most part, but am not in love with the typography. Also, the dog’s footprint doesn’t seem quite right for your site. Then again, am I correct that this was under $20? If so, it’s outstanding for the price.
This is an interesting journey, thanks for sharing it with us.
I’m interested to see the results of from the other design team.
Take care and have a great weekend!

Hi Lori!
Thanks for a paying a visit. And thanks so much for your comments on the logo. Yes… $19… a bargain. I used to charge $750-$1,000 for a single logo design over a decade ago! We’ll see what the others look like. I’m happy to share this. Hopefully, during the course of the project I’m sharing ideas on how to think about branding and how to think about who you are as a company. This really hasn’t been about how cheap a logo can be had, you know. And it was a revelation for me personally when I realized how beneficial it can be to put yourself in your client’s shoes! That is priceless.
As to the first design, well…. I’m not exactly jumping up and down with joy. They missed the mark entirely when I consider the guidelines I gave. But then again, as you say, pretty great for the price.
It was awesome to have you participate. Thank you!
Theresa
If the guidelines you gave them were “A little edgy. A little humorous. A little… sangfroid with some insouciance and obstreperous(ness) thrown in. Daringly innovative. Yet friendly and approachable.” then I understand why they may have missed the mark – sangfroid, insouciance and obstreperous???? Are you kidding me? I have an MBA and don’t know what that means. I’m just suggesting, simplify….. : )))
Reaching for my dictionary as we speak…..
Hi Janet,
Yes…as I said, “Let’s see what all 3 make of this.
”
Maybe I should publish the entire questionnaire with my answers. Interested in seeing it? As a designer, I would have loved the description I gave. Most clients told me, “I have no idea…you’re the designer, go for it.” I’m simply illustrating think, think, think about who you are and what you want. Have some idea of your voice, your color, your personality, your aspirations…
Glad someone’s paying attention. Thanks Janet! And, thanks for calling me on my craziness.
BTW:
sang·froid
Composure or coolness as shown in danger or under trying circumstances. Coolness of mind; calmness; composure.
in·sou·ci·ance
The cheerful feeling you have when nothing is troubling you. Lighthearted, blithe unconcern; nonchalant; calm and untroubled; carefree; indifferent.
ob·strep·er·ous
Noisy and difficult to control. Noisy, clamorous, or boisterous.
