It’s almost March 2010… how are you doing on those resolutions you set two months ago? Maybe you shouldn’t have called them resolutions — how about, “things I’m going to do differently”, or gulp, “goals”?
For this post, let’s call them goals and let’s assume they’re going to be fun. And then you think, “Hey why not? They didn’t work out too well when they weren’t fun”. So, think about it differently… what if they helped you be better at something you already loved doing? What if they made your relationships better? What if someone else benefited, rather than you?
Goals do not have to be the same old, same old and they definitely don’t have to be what everyone else is doing. Let’s see… how about you’re going to gain weight, start working more hours and stop exercising completely? All joking aside, everyone has those weight goals, those exercise goals, etc. — year in year out — and they’ve become almost a caricature of themselves, ergo, the goals you’ll never succeed at.
I’ve been setting goals for over a decade and I have 100’s of friends who set goals. My results are not always stellar: I’ve been wildly successful, I’ve missed the boat entirely and fallen flat on my face, and I’ve had successes in between — but, through all of this, I have never stopped setting goals. And, I’ve become more creative.
Set goals under categories: money, business, lifestyle, entertainment, dreams, travel, education, books to read, charitable contributions, volunteering, eliminating stress, family pleasures… the list is fluid.
Do you believe you would be more likely to continue setting goals if you enjoyed the process of achieving them? It’s OK to start over. There’s no rule you must start on January 1st and then all bets are off after that, win or lose. Start small. Write it down. The act of enjoying it, documenting it and achieving it will set you up for loftier goals later.
